Anybody figure out yet how to increase the odds of getting a Sinnoh stone after the battle? (First time I tried it last night, both trainers got one, second time only the winner got one. Nothing the third or fourth time (this morning). Were the first ones just a promotional thing to get people to try the PvP, or what?)

I doubt you can do something to influence it.
There were a few reports of even getting 5 Sinnoh Stones when it was just released. Niantic probably tweaked it a bit after.
Its just at random. I only got 4*500 stardust todayā€¦
