Thank you for your very detailed report @Jormdeworm! Now I understand. You must have sent me some of your shiny luck because I have just found another shiny!

Oh goodness, I gave you the only one I wanted from this event it seems ![]()
I noticed that Poke stop density in your area is insane. How is it possible to cram so many Poke stops in such a small area? Are they all in different S2 cells? I try to cover my town with as many Poke stops as I can and I filled every single S2 cell in the central area, but Poke stops are still more apart than in your area.

I think so yes. Let me get my map.
Turns out there are two in two S2 Cells twice:
Here is the overall map shown in S2 Cells:
How is it possible to have 2 Poke stops in one level 17 S2 cell?
Before Wayfarer existed, so we are speaking around 2018/‘19 here, if Pokestops were moved to another S2 Cell that already contained another PokéStop (or Gym), it would then have two Instead. Two of these were indeed moved really early on in the game, causing this. One of them is completely at the wrong spot but apparently no has bothered to correct it.
With the introduction of Wayfarer I read they reworked the system a bit so that if it gets moved to another S2 Cell that already has another Wayspot in there, it would be removed instead. However I tested this out myself and it didn’t actually get removed. Now we have an abomination of a Stop that is right inside of a Gym. It’s the one Gym on the far left.

@Jormdeworm This was indeed a very, very interesting read, thank you for the detailed report. Plenty of useful info, too for good tips!
Question: When you encountered that shiny moltres, you mentioned waiting a bit to avoid being speed locked. How do you do this? Do you wait for the bus to stop and start attempting to catch? Do you chance it between bus stops? (won’t it flee here?) Or do you hold on to the shiny in that encounter screen until you get to the end stop?
When I’m a passenger on the car I usually try the daily incense, but never tested catching a shiny and see if it runs away (never saw a shiny while a passenger -.-)
It’s so nice to see areas with so many pokestops! The number of possible encounters must be through the roof.
From the hatching event so far (played for 1 hour and then the heat was hell), I got another smoochum, so the family is complete.
And I got this little beauty!!!

(I am unsure if it was from an egg with just a larvesta or with smoochum + magby).
And look at these stats! I got so close to having a perfect shiny. And hey, it’s a female larvesta!

I was very, very lucky here!
I had been keeping a bunch of incubators in my inventory, so I managed to stock at least 5 more eggs for this event. I’ll update later if anything new hatches.
I remembered I once listed the spawns for a round through the harbour. However, I don’t think this could have been one round based on the total amount. Sadly I didn’t write that info down. I’m going to guess and say this was either started from home, walking towards the spot, one round and then back, or it was two rounds. But here is a glimpse (it would be a bit overwhelming to list them all here so I only added the last one I tracked that day):
Thursday Aug. 27th 2020 spawns
Partly Cloudy
769. Duskull
It does seem a bit much for one round for sure. But I cannot recall it enough.
Generally speed locks work like this:
You can throw one ball just fine. You either catch it, or don’t. In the case you catch it, you have to remember you are speed locked now, and any other Pokémon you catch will run until you have either reduced enough in speed or until it’s been too long for the game to remember you being speed locked (I have no idea how long that is, but it is a thing). If you fail to catch it, it will break out but not run (I am unsure if shinies can run anyway, I have seen whole debates about this but never a verification). In this case, STOP catching it. You will be speed locked and any future attempt will let it run. Instead, wait until you have FULLY stopped, and preferably even longer to be sure the speed lock is fully gone.
I did indeed throw balls at bus stops to attempt to catch it, and I completely avoided throwing even a single ball whilst going too fast just to be sure (even though the first one should be fine). However I kept failing to catch it every time the bus stopped so I was only able to catch it when I had to get off the bus.
In general running the Daily Incense while driving works fine, however you have to absolutely avoid catching anything you didn’t really need because it might instantly set the speed lock in motion for the next one you try to catch.
Getting speed locked instantly isn’t a guarantee, you might be lucky and be able to throw more balls before the game registers a speed lock. But it’s definitely risky.
thanks! That’s awesome to know and I’ll try to keep that in mind. I don’t have that many occasions to play in that scenario but it’s useful always.
Results from yesterday’s egg event:
As you can see, my shiny luck ran out after shiny larvesta. Not a single shiny after that.
I was also chased by many pink ducks, as you can see. There’s at least 2 others that aren’t here because I transferred them already, but the proportion of magby vs. smoochum was very one sided, that I did notice. (I hatched another today!)
I have at least 7 more eggs to go, that I will hatch slowly as I will again save on the incubators until next event, hopefully shiny magby will appear. I’m missing that one (plus evolution).
Lucky remote trade shiny from @celery
