Pokémon That Look Similar To Horses

There is something about Pokémon creatures that makes us want to catch them all. Each Pokémon comes with unique traits, looks, and abilities, and we have a collection that has been built over many years.

Nowadays, there are more than 1,000 Pokémon, ranging from the original 151 introduced in Generation I to the most recent additions in Generation IX.

When it comes to their appearance, you’ve pretty much got anything to choose from. From birds to works, and of course, horses.

But let’s niche down and find out all the Pokémon with horse-like appearance. You’ll be surprised to find out that there are actually many equine Pokémon that will make any horse lover happy. This is actually a new trend where the original line from [Pokémon “(Pokémon: Yeah! I Got Pokémon! - Bulbapedia, the community-driven Pokémon encyclopedia) is kind of hard, which is why people are choosing a specific type of Pokémon whether by their element or appearance and they are going on a hunt.

Although most of them have mythical appearances, they are obviously inspired by horses.

So, if you love horses, and want something to occupy yourself with whether it is by collecting Pokémon cards or catching Pokémon in the game, I’d suggest you start with finding all the horse-looking creatures.

There aren’t many but some of them are hard to find or must be evolved.

Ponyta and Rapidash

If you grew up on Pokémon, you probably remember these flaming beauties from Gen 1. Ponyta is like that adorable foal trying to find its legs, but give it some time, and bam! You get Rapidash, a blazing stallion that can gallop at nearly 150 mph.

I think if there is a Pokémon horse race, my money is on Rapidash as he will be the clear winner. Unfortunately, horse racing is still not available in Pokémon.

Plus, these two got a chic makeover in Pokémon Sword and Shield with a Galarian form that’s more unicorn than horse. Fun fact: Rapidash is known for its incredible speed, making it one of the fastest Pokémon out there!

Mudbray and Mudsdale

This duo brings a different kind of horsepower—earthy and gritty. Mudbray looks more like a donkey than a horse, but it evolves into Mudsdale, which looks more like a horse. When you see Mudbray you’d immediately think that this Pokémon is harmless.

Mudbray loves rolling around in the mud, but don’t let its playful nature fool you.

Evolve it into Mudsdale, and you’ve got yourself a powerhouse with a 125-attack stat! It’s like going from a pony to a Clydesdale in no time. Seriously, don’t mess with Mudsdale unless you want to feel the earth shake under its mighty hooves.

Keldeo

Is it a horse? Is it a unicorn? The answer is yes to both. Keldeo is a legendary Pokémon with a splash of unicorn charm. Part of the Swords of Justice, this Water/Fighting-type Pokémon is as majestic as it is powerful. It can walk on water—yep, you heard that right. Keldeo’s movepool is as vast as the ocean, making it a versatile choice in battles.

Blitzle and Zebstrika

Okay, so they’re zebras, but let’s not get picky. After all, this creature has four legs and a body in the shape of a horse. The only thing that will remind you of a zebra is the thunder stripes all over its body.

Blitzle and Zebstrika might not win any beauty contests, but they sure bring the thunder. Literally. Zebstrika is known for its Electric-type moves and can run at electrifying speeds. Blitzle’s mane even lights up to communicate—how’s that for sparking a conversation?

Stantler and Wyrdeer

Technically more deer than horses, but Stantler and its evolution, Wyrdeer, have a certain mystique that’s hard to ignore.

You get a horse-looking Pokémon with big horns on its head. It has a powerful stance and something that will always scare away your opponent.

Wyrdeer, introduced in Pokémon Legends: Arceus, even acts as your noble steed in the game, helping you traverse the ancient lands of Hisui. It’s got that old-world, mystical vibe that just screams “legendary.”

Glastrier and Spectrier

These two are like the yin and yang of horse Pokémon. Glastrier is a frosty, powerful beast, while Spectrier is more of a ghostly, ethereal presence.

Personally, these two are my favorite horse-like Pokémon. Glastrier has a frozen head and all of its four legs are frozen, and Spectrier is quite scary, to be honest with its long ghost-looking mane.

They’re part of the Crown Tundra DLC in Pokémon Sword and Shield, and each brings its own unique flavor to the battlefield. Glastrier is all about brute strength, while Spectrier excels in speed and special attacks.

Why Do Pokémon Resemble Horses?

Ever wonder why Pokémon creators seem to have a thing for horses? Horses symbolize speed, strength, and grace—qualities that make for a compelling Pokémon. Plus, who wouldn’t want a flaming horse or a thunder-powered zebra on their team? These Pokémon bring a blend of power and elegance that’s hard to beat.

Make a relation… how many Pokémon like horses you have seen? And how many other types of Pokémon are? It seems (to me) there are much more other types. So to me they are no special meta to Niantic workers.

I love Rapidash! It just looks so cool and magnificent, it’s absolutely one of my favourite pokemon. I’m really looking forward to Ponyta Community Day, I’m preparing now saving up pokeballs/storage!

One of my other favourite pokemon is Hisuian Arcanine, it just looks so glorious and the color combination works really well. I’d love for the shiny Ponyta to have that colour scheme… Can you imagine a Rapidash looking like that?! Awesome!

I didn’t know most of the other pokemon (apart from Blitzle - that I have yet to evolve - and Stantler), but they look really nice, too, especially Mudsdale (I really want to catch that now) and Spectrier.

As there’s Stantler there, I’ll mention Deerling too and the evolutions. I think they’re really neat with each being different according to the season, I think it’s a nice touch. And Sawsbuck looks great, especially winter and autumn forms.

But coming back to horses and mythology, I would LOVE if they ever added a pokemon inspired by a hippocampus (half horse half fish). It’s such a beautiful, stunning creature! I think it would fit really well.

Fun fact:
Zebras are in fact horses!

They belong to the biological family of equidae (horse-like species).
Stems from the Latin word “Equus” (Horse)

The four main biological groups in the family are:

  • Horses
  • Donkeys
  • Onager
  • Zebras
