I really hope this is true, would be the most exciting event in some time. I have the candy ready to evolve everything except Magnezone. The evolution stones make sense with the Eevee weekend coming up too.
If there are 500 extra spaces that would mean that Gen 4 comes in total. Not just a few evolutions. If I’m not mistaken, this is somewhat similar to previous Gen releases.

Agreed, 4 days of Gym activity to get 1 Increase is too long. Before the Gym rework and reduction from 100 coins to 50 I was only 2 days per increase.

Agreed. There is no reason why niantic should put a limit on this stuff. It just means less money for them.
