Dust seems way more important now the longer I play the game. I have all kinds of stuff to trade to my son, but he barely has any dust. 4 more days until we are Ultra Friends and can start doing more trades.

Yes, dust plays bigger role in the game now since trading has been added, it encourages trading by introducing lucky Pokémon and by doing lucky Pokémon (dust discount to power up), it compensates dust spending thru trading a bit.

I would say:
Xp for players that arent 40
Stardust for players that are 40
Double Candie events, but only if rare or new pokemon (gen 4s) are spawning.
