I successfully enlarge my pokebox to 700 spaces even though I’m a free-to-play players. In my estimation, I am not necessarily to enlarge the box if gen 7 is the last gen with the limitation of holding 1 Pokemon per entry and no pre-evolutions in my box. Just work hard to achieve it.
