Unless you started play after Shiny Magikarp was released into the Game the caught/seen statistics are not a true reflection. Take mine above for example, I’d caught somewhere around 4-500 Magikarp before it was released

And for any Pokemon it still counts against # seen when you see one in a gym - as if you could even TRY to catch it.

Seeing one in a Gym counts once only and that’s only if you haven’t caught one yet.
Once you’ve caught a Pokemon seeing the same Pokemon in a Gym does not count.

12 Gyarados and enough candy to create 4 more. Almost 1600 Magikarp, still no shiny.
I refuse to trade for it. I want to know how long it will take to catch one.

My 1114th Magikarp was a Shiny. I’m now at 1300+ seen and haven’t found a second yet.
