Only two more levels until that happens. Are there any level-up requirements to reach lvl. 40?
No, they start from there on. Each level-up (40 - 41, 41 - 42, etc.) have there own requirements.
One third of the way to paradise.
Just another 20 million XP to go - which is, of course, like starting the game all over again and getting from 0 to Level 40…

I could totally imagine them doing that to keep the long-term players in the game awhile longer.
Niantic’s wanton rollbacks of all the quality of life enhancements from last year are ruining the game beyond what a few trivial concessions can compensate, though. I plan to sit out on Monday, May 30 for the protest against that, as announced by @Branebs , and to leave PoGO behind permanently if those rollbacks continue.

After three years, I’ve finally done it. It’s like a blink of an eye, I’ll be back to Level 1. All the raids, Trainer battles, egg hatching, grunt battling, and GBL sets have prepared me for this moment.
Time passes by when you’re having fun.
